BarberEVO North America Issue 1

Barbering and the barbershop, as both a craft and institution, is steeped in history and deeply engrained in North American culture. Barbering, however, is no longer just a craft; barbering is a movement and subculture that encompasses a range of different disciplines and influences.

We often heard “we have nothing like this back home” from American and Canadian figures featured in our UK publication. We have accepted the challenge and are proud to present Barber Evo North America #1. As with its sister magazine, our aim to product a publication befitting of North America’s evolving barbering movement.

In fact, the very definition of barbering is evolving and inside issue one we try to tackle the not so simple question of “what is barbering?”. Hawleywoods Proprietor Donnie Hawley remains a bastion for the old school, and we travel to LA to meet with two faces changing the game, Julius Caesar and Sofie Pok. One thing is clear: barbering is more than just cutting hair.

Inside the other ninety or pages we delve into barbershop interiors, discover the barbershops of NYC, bring you the wisdom of top barbering educators and much, much more.

So without future adieu, we give you Evo NA #1.

Prize draw in aid of CHECT at Barber and Hair UK 2018

At Barber and Hair UK this year there will be a charity stage for the children’s eye cancer retinoblastoma. The charity CHECT will be holding both the Hair Stage and the Barber stage.

This was put together by a few hair and barber professionals that have been personally affected by this condition.

Alison Scattergood, of East Durham college, was affected by this childhood cancer at the tender age of 6 weeks. Alison has shown strength and courage throughout her successful career, not letting this awful childhood cancer hold her back from anything.

Mike Taylor’s 3-year-old daughter Alice was diagnosed with the condition in May 2017 and they are still fighting through chemotherapy. This has been a challenging time for Mike, Emily and the family, but through the great work that CHECT do, they have found solace.

Alison and Mike got together with the charity CHECT, of whom Alison is an ambassador for, to offer to help raise some funds for the small charity and more importantly raise awareness

The duo are having a prize draw in which a phenomenal amount of generosity has been shown by global barbering and hairdressing brands. Some of the prizes available include; a Takara Belmont Chair, FAB Hair products, American Crew products, a Denman hamper, a full display from Dapper Dan, Mode styling kit, Barber pro products and moustache lights and so much more. TABAC Expands Range with New Beard Oil and Gains New Stockist, Barber Blades

Male grooming brand TABAC has expanded its product range once again, with the addition of a new Beard Oil; building on the success of its fragrance range and shaving products used widely by barbers in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. The full range of shaving products is now being exclusively stocked at trade prices for barbers by Barber Blades.

TABAC was established in 1959 and is most widely known for the nostalgic scent of its signature fragrance. After the success of the fragrance, a collection of male grooming products was launched by the brand, including a shaving range; which rapidly became a favourite amongst barbers.

The full range has been created with barbers in mind and has just become available to purchase at trade prices through www.barberblades.co.uk; the latest stockist of the products. Although previously focused on a male fragrance and traditional, tallow-based shaving products, TABAC has now launched a Beard Oil to meet the demand from barbers for such a product; given the beard trend that has swept the nation in recent years.

Following the success of Shave The Day in December, a campaign by TABAC in collaboration with Age UK that encouraged barbers to offer free wet shaves, haircuts and other treatments to older members of their communities to combat loneliness, the brand is now working to increase awareness of its product range amongst barbershops in the UK; to build on the success the brand already experiences in Germany and the Netherlands.

Having Barber Blades as a new stockist and addition to the product range is the start of a busy year for TABAC, with more announcements and activity planned throughout 2018.

The full TABAC range can be found here: https://barberblades.co.uk/tabac-shaving-cologne

Ruth Morgan-Evans, Marketing Manager of TABAC, said the following:

“Barbers have been so impressed with the range of products TABAC has to offer, because they bring a really premium feel to the shaving and male grooming experience. Barbers tell us how much they love the shaving cream in particular, because it doesn’t crack like so many other brands’ offerings.

“The nostalgic scent of all the products is one that the modern man has come to love, thanks to this retro revival that we’re experiencing.  With bold facial hair being a current trend that shows no sign of slowing down, Beard Oil was a natural progression for the product range. We’re so pleased that barbers will now be able to purchase the full range of TABAC products from Barber Blades. After the success of Shave The Day and TABAC being more widely used by barbers, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for the range.”

Luke Dolan, Barber and TABAC Ambassador, said:

“Since I started stocking TABAC products, we’re doing more shaves than ever in both of my shops, so I really feel that wet shaves are going to continue growing in popularity. However, there are plenty of lads out there who are proud of their facial hair and have no plans to get rid, which is where the new Beard Oil comes into play for us. As a barber, it’s often hard to come across products that our customers really love as much as we do, but the nostalgic scent and familiarity of TABAC really keeps them coming back, so it’s been great from a client retention perspective.”

Denman International Announce Paul Stafford as their Global Creative Director

British company Denman, maker of the world-famous D3 and other professional tools, is proud to announce the appointment of British Hairdressing Hall of Fame member Paul Stafford as Global Creative Director.

The move brings Paul, who has been using Denman for more than 30 years, into the heart of the long-established, family led company. Paul will lead its creative contribution to the industry, supporting Denman’s education efforts including mentorship of 2017 Denman’s Stage Star competition winner, Sam Carpenter.

As Global Creative Director, Paul will also lead the soon-to-be-launched global ambassador programme, The Denman Global Collective, which features established and emerging stylists from across the globe.

Paul’s appointment coincides with Denman’s 80th anniversary. In 1938, John Denman Dean was inspired by a revolutionary new material, Nylon to create the iconic Denman styling brush. Adopted by world-leading hairstylists including Vidal Sassoon, Paul Mitchell and Andrew Collinge, the D3 and other Denman tools have help transform the industry. This spirit of innovation and transformation continues to guide the brand and Paul will be central to its efforts.

Next month Paul will travel to the US to represent Denman as an educator at the IBS Show in New York City, delivering his inaugural IBS seminar on The Craft of Precision Cutting. Paul will then represent Denman at Cosmoprof Bologna for the formal launch of the Denman Global Collective. On his return, he will create and shoot a new Denman collection with long-time collaborator Lee Mitchell.

‘I treasure the support Denman has given me over the years so am delighted to officially represent the company at an international level,’ said Paul, who, in recent years was asked by Denman to perform at the visionary Alternative Hair Show at London’s Albert Hall. ‘Denman has always been at the heart of the industry, providing the best tools a stylist could wish for at every level of the craft. It’s fantastic to be part of a brand that prioritises excellence and innovation to the benefit of our industry.’

Considered the rock ‘n’ roll maverick of the industry and a break-out Instagram hero, Paul is the perfect partner for Denman, able to bring all his expertise right into the factory to help with product development while giving the company the creative kudos it deserves as the originator of the iconic D3.

Phillip Steele, Managing Director of Denman, said ’We have been very fortunate to have such a friend and partner in Paul over the past 30 years. We are delighted that Paul will play a more substantial role in driving the future of the Denman brand and its presentation globally. I look forward to deepening our partnership and the continuation of our long-standing friendship.’

Known for his impeccable dressing and Mod-inspired personal style almost as much as for his skills with the scissors, Paul is a regular in the press and on TV, where he is sought out for his original views on anything and everything hair and fashion-related. He is a multi-award-winning stylist, currently Hair magazine’s Salon Stylist of the Year and three times winner of Northern Irish Hairdresser of the Year.
