What’s Trending Over Autumn?

As the summer months come to a close, Jim Shaw, owner of Toni & Guy Billericay predicts that autumn will bring a new set of styles to keep the inspiration flowing.

Colour

When it comes to colour for men this autumn/winter, there will be one stand out hair colour trend – bleached hair. Men will look to lighten and brighten their hair up and have this toned to give their hair a clean, platinum hue or an icy white/grey tone that’s fitting for the season.

The great thing about this trend is that should the client get bored of the colour, they can experiment by adding in slices of colour to give their look a fun, playful finish for the season.

In summer, we saw men wearing their hair super short and teaming this with bold neon tones like oranges and greens. For autumn/winter, we will see cooler toned brights becoming popular, such as dark greens, blues and purples for men who want to add a pop of colour to their look.

Cuts

Disconnected cuts have been in and out of fashion over recent years and for autumn/winter they’re back on trend, whereby we will see clients requesting their hair super short on the sides with longer length on top. The idea with this hair cut is that the top of the hair looks ‘disconnected’ from the sides and that instead of fading from short to long on top, the style is more abrupt and makes a statement.

The regulation cut, a military-inspired cut, will also be popular this season. This is a very sharp and fresh style whereby the hair is trimmed down on the top but kept longer than the sides, which are tapered and gradually cut shorter before reaching the nape of the neck where the hair can be shaved off completely to help reflect a true regulation cut look. This haircut is usually styled in a statement side parting and sleek to the side for a further clean finish.

For those looking for a haircut that’s longer in length and more textured, mullets will be THE textured haircut of the season. The hair should usually be cut shorter and choppier towards the front and sides and left longer at the back, however, for autumn/winter 2022 I think we will see a more modern take on this trend, with clients looking for the graduation to be a lot softer and graduated.

We may also see men wearing the mullet a lot shorter and teaming it with a blunt fringe/almost French crop style around the face to give it a modern and trendy appearance for the new season. With all mullets and textured hairstyles, I love to use a salt spray or hair mousse and my scrunch this in with my fingers to enhance the layers and choppiness of the look and give it a further edgy finish.

Styling

In terms of styling for autumn/winter 2022, this all depends on the cut the male client has. However, for those with shorter haircuts, we will see them wearing these a lot sleeker in appearance, incorporating pomades with a shine finish, gels and waxes into their hair styling routine that will give their hair look a neater, more polished appearance.

We will see men using these products to slick their hair back off the face, to one side and also mixing these products with other products like serums and oils to give their hair a wet like appearance with a high shine.

Smart Energy: A Greener Future for Barbers

As Covid restrictions come to an end, it’s never been more important for businesses to stand out from the crowd. And with many customers keen to tackle the climate crisis, being a more sustainable barber could give you the edge while doing good for the planet.

A recent survey of 1,000 small business owners found that nearly a quarter (21%) worry about missing out on trade because their business is not sustainable enough, while nearly half (42%) of consumers say they are more likely to visit a business that cares about sustainability.

The good news is there’s a simple first step your barbers can make to not only help it become more sustainable, but also make energy management easier; get a smart meter installed.

Smart meters replace traditional analogue energy meters and can help businesses keep better track of their energy use and consumption. Whether you rely on a collection of clippers or a handful of hairdryers, a smart meter will give you access to information on how much energy is used day-to-day, helping you find ways to reduce it.

Having a smart meter installed will not only bolster your barbershop’s eco-credentials, but also help make your business energy easier to manage.

The technology, available at no extra cost from your business’ energy supplier, ensures accurate bills by sending meter readings automatically so you can spend time making people look and feel great.

To help you be even more efficient Smart Energy GB offers barbers a selection of quick and easy steps to help your barbershop stand out as an eco-friendly business:

  1. Recycle smarter – Buying refillable products will drastically cut down the packaging waste and also save you a bit of money.
  2. Use an eco-hairdryer – New and improved versions of the trusty hairdryer are more energy efficient and come in recycled packaging and plastic. As the most popular appliance used to fix a bad hair day, an eco-hairdryer will help cut your carbon footprint while fixing your hair.
  3. Keep cool – Using cooler water to rinse hair is not only great for the scalp and your hair’s condition and shine, it’s also more efficient. While it’s not everyone’s preference, asking your customer if they’d prefer it could offer another step towards to a lower energy bill.
  4. Avoid aerosols – Non-aerosol hair sprays will last 3 or 4 times longer than the aerosol versions and can be a great way to hold down that one curly lock that just won’t stay in place. What’s more, you can pick them up for the same price!
  5. A simple solution – For those customers unsure of what style to go for next, offering a low maintenance hair cut could pass on the saving with less need for heated appliances and products when they get home.

To find out if your business is eligible for a smart meter, contact your energy supplier. You can then arrange a date and time suitable for you for your installation.

Once installation is complete, your installer can show you and your staff how your smart meter works so you can get on with being green.

Barber Turns Basement into a Video Store

Brian Hogan, a father of two, barbershop owner, and film buff in Des Moines, Iowa, found himself fairly miserable in the midst of the pandemic. With his Barbershop business all but obliterated, Brian was looking for a project to keep his sanity.

That’s when he heard that his favourite, childhood video store, Video Warehouse, was going out of business after 34 years.

Buying out the contents of the video store, including the shelves and the ‘Tape Return” sign,  Brian embarked on the DIY project to create an in-house video store.

He said, “I spent a lot of days sitting in my chair hoping people would come and get their hair cut. I’d go home and catalogue and start hanging shelves. It took my mind off things.”

With no intension of setting the video store as a business, Brian explained: “It’s more of a time capsule,” meant for family and friends, he said. “Friends who come over get to pick out a movie and we watch it.”

He continued: “I spent a good part of my childhood in the video store. That was a Friday night thing. You didn’t just go to the video store. You went to the video store.”

American Crew Introduces 2021 Collection: HQ

As featured in the April edition of BarberEVO North America

American Crew® has introduced The 2021 Collection: HQ, a trend offering that takes old-school barber techniques to new heights.

This new collection features techniques that fuse clean editorial silhouettes with dramatic, exaggerated shapes. HQ, short for Height Quotient, is inspired by the military crew cut while paying homage to the nineties film and music eras.

Embodying the perfect harmony between austere aesthetics and solid fundamentals, the curated program consists of six cuts and offers styling options for various hair densities and textures. With a focus on tapered barbered fades, HQ capitalizes on height as a level for disciplines and diverse creative expressions.

“Men’s style is constantly evolving. By taking a step back from the meticulously groomed look, we are seeing a resurgence of dynamic shapes and texture — and our HQ Collection celebrates just that,” said American Crew Founder David Raccuglia, “HQ is a bold barber-centric collection that allows stylists to adapt any texture or type of hair to achieve the style their client desires. I absolutely love the fact that the shape of a haircut can cross into so many cultures.”

David continued: “Needless to say, our industry has been hit hard by the pandemic with the closures of barbershops, salons and schools. It’s been a challenging year for the Pro community, but their strength and resilience hasn’t kept them down. While their businesses have been shut, they’ve applied themselves to further their learning and precise their techniques – they really are some of the hardest working people out there! As a team, we knew we had to get creative and pivot our educational strategy to support the Pro when they need it the most and HQ has been our creative vehicle for that. We are offering a plethora of digital education with HQ so this is an incredible and very versatile collection that stylists and barbers around the world can utilize to learn new techniques.”

YAH YAH

Highlighting Yah Yah’s incredible texture, this cut features a strong square and tall technical shape throughout the front whilst focusing on a curved silhouette and a blown out, non-textured finish. The razor fade exaggerates a clean blend of skin to hair in the perimeter for strength and scalp exposure.

Product used: American Crew® Ultra Gliding Shave Oil, Lather Shave Cream, Revitalizing Toner and Prep & Prime Tonic.

ANDREI

Andrei’s silhouette driven cut is a 90’s movies styling journey. Inspired by iconic looks featured in Rocky and Top Gun, and utilizing American Crew Boost Powder for extra volume, the hair is styled using an upward momentum to create the dramatic shape.

Products used: American Crew® Prep & Prime Tonic and Boost Powder.

VIN

Vin’s structure contains a concave interior to recreate an editorial version of the traditional 50’s flat top. The strong silhouette helps build the exterior, exaggerating the clipper over comb enhanced interior, while the texture and separation results in a structured yet broken finish.

Products used: American Crew® Prep & Prime Tonic, Firm Hold Gel and Molding Clay.
