Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Williamsburg, a very hip borough in Brooklyn, NY with the longest bearded man I had ever met. Joe Loving (@beardspiration12), Managing Partner for Mean Beard (@mean_beard), and I had met on the phone a week previous and had agreed to meet up at Barbercon, one of the barbering industries premiere events. Joe has a great story behind his beard and brand. Several years back Joe’s son was diagnosed with hemophilia. He decided to raise awareness for the cause and grow out his beard. He called the charity fundraiser “Beards for Bleeders”. Three years later, Joe is still rocking the beard and is one year into his new start up beard care brand! His claim for success,“Don’t trim it!”
Lee Resnick started Barbercon in 2016 as the live networking event for @barbershopconnect, the first social site exclusively for Barbers worldwide. Barbershoppeconnect originally focused on the urban barber movement. Over the last couple of years Barbercon has morphed into one of the leading events for the men’s grooming industry worldwide. This years event attracted more mainstream vendors and cosmetologists then the previous two years combined. An education element was added which has taken it to another level, beyond a social networking event for barbers.
The evolution of urban barbering has come together with the lifestyle movement, high end mens fashion and old school traditional grooming, exploding onto the mainstream stage. There have been signs of this growth development over the last few decades, but the latest push is more then just a short term trend. Salons are feeling the need to up their game in the men’s grooming segment. We are only just beginning to see how the growth in men’s grooming has increased the need for gender specific brands on the professional product shelve space. Don’t be surprised to see traditional women focused beauty stores and online professional only e- commerce sites expand their offerings, and in some cases, change their names to attract the male shopper!
The mainstream acceptance of mens grooming has created a fundamental need for cosmologists to increase their skill set to offer expanded men’s services. Hot towel shaving, guard free clipper cutting and facial grooming are in high demand. While traditional barbering techniques has been somewhat of lost art throughout North America over the last few decades, there are regions on the globe where traditional mens grooming has stayed relevant, including the United Kingdom and the Middle East, where it never really went away.
Experts from industry leaders like the British Barbers’ Association (@BritshBarbers) have been very well received in North America over the last couple of years, as stylists and barbers alike, look to advance their men’s grooming skills. Traditional cosmetology providers including Pivot Point International (@pivotpointint) have recently launched a major foundation barbing program targeting cosmetology schools to start offering men’s grooming and barbering specific programs.
Guys are really into the latest grooming techniques and products. They are keeping their hair styles and beards well groomed and looking great. The average Joe is now more hip then ever!

Ok, so football may not be coming home but it still remains quite the year for barbering and the success has been spread across the UK and Ireland.
The barbering industry in Ireland and Northern Ireland has continued to develop its own identity and is explored and celebrated inside the pages of issue ten.
The incredible Ryan Cullen is the star of this month’s Barber Focus, we take a look at Londonderry’s Bareknuckle Barbershop and delve into the shops of Northern Ireland’s capital.
This now the tenth issue and although we seem to have the format down (to some extent) the brand is still evolving. Headcase Barbers – with almost 30 barbershops across the globe – discuss what it takes to create a brand and we speak to two of our favourites, Hard Grind and Captain Fawcett.
We also welcome new columnists, including Ruger Barber’s Carlie Firth, and some of our friends from across the pond to give their insight into the industry. As always, all this and much more can be found across the next hundred pages.
Now available as an app on both iOS and Android.

50p from each tub sold is donated straight back to The Lions Barber Collective; helping the charity to raise awareness and prevent male suicides all over the world.
Premium men’s grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge is pleased to announce the launch of a brand new hair gel in collaboration with men’s mental health charity The Lions Barber Collective.
The Bluebeards Revenge Hair Gel has been developed especially with barbers in mind to provide them with a professional, multipurpose product that can handle both retro spikes and modern textured masterpieces.
Most importantly, 50p from each tub sold is donated straight back to The Lions Barber Collective; helping the charity to raise awareness and prevent male suicides all over the world.
Founder of The Lions Barber Collective and award-winning hairstylist Tom Chapman was heavily involved in the development of this new product. He said: “Collaborating with our friends at The Bluebeards Revenge in any way is a privilege. But to have the chance to develop a product alongside them that actively helps to support our work while giving back to the barbering community is phenomenal.”
“I have always dreamt of developing hair products, so to collaborate on a product that I use every day was very exciting. Hair gels have come such a long way in recent years and now offer so much more than the brightly coloured concoctions of the past.
“The hair gel we have created with The Bluebeards Revenge reflects the evolving landscape of men’s hairstyling and is an essential product for barbers. Its versatility means it acts as a fantastic cutting agent, enabling hairstylists to create neat sections and partings in both long and short wet hair. It also works perfectly as a pre-styling product, meaning stylists can create hold and shape in the hair with very little product residue. Add to that its classic barbershop fragrance and strong hold and it’s a really rounded product that is head and shoulders above the supermarket slimes!”
The Bluebeards Revenge’s commitment to raising awareness and preventing male suicide can be seen on the inside of every hair gel’s carton.
Bradley Wicks, a spokesman for the brand, said: “The inside of our cartons have been branded with life-saving information from The Lions Barber Collective. Upon opening the carton, barbers and their clients can read all about the support available to them: whether that’s how to become an official Lions’ Barber, or where to find the right support to fight back against the stigma that surround mental ill health in men.
“The latter has even attracted the attention of world-renowned suicide prevention charity Samaritans, who have kindly allowed us to include their contact information to signpost men to appropriate help at any time.”
