American Crew partnered with celebrity hairstylists at the 2023 Met Gala

American Crew partnered with celebrity hairstylists Laila Hayani and Kumi Craig to provide sleek and on-theme hair for Succession actors Jeremy Strong and Alexander Skarsgard.

Laila Hayani for Jeremy Strong at Met Gala 2023, by American Crew®

Inspiration: Jeremy’s Met Gala look this year was driven by a classic, clean gentleman’s cut. This hair style has a very precise edge and defined shape which requires just the right amount of product to look polished without weighing it down. Using American Crew Fiber Cream, Grooming Cream, and Alternator allowed us to achieve the exact result we were looking for and prepare Jeremy for the red carpet,” states celebrity groomer, Laila Hayani.

Look Breakdown

  1. To begin styling the look, I worked a pea-sized amount of American Crew® Fiber™ Cream into the top of Jeremy’s clean, damp hair which helped to thicken the hair and add flexibility and control.
  2. Then, I applied a fingertip amount of American Crew® Grooming Cream and manipulated his hair to the natural direction of his hair grain; I used American Crew® Grooming Cream for high shine, to provide conditioning elements, and repel moisture to keep his style intact for the remainder of the night.
  3. Next, I lightly diffused the hair on a cool setting to dry it in place. Once fully dry, I spritzed a light amount of American Crew® Alternator Finishing Spray to create additional holding power.
  4. For the last step in his red-carpet regimen, I used American Crew® Revitalizing Toner to soothe the skin around the beard and neck area and add a cooling effect for a refreshed feel. I then applied American Crew® All-In-One Face Balm to the neck and around the side of the hair to moisturize the skin and complete this clean, classic look!

Kumi Craig for Alexander Skarsgard at Met Gala 2023, by American Crew®

Inspiration: For Alexander’s MET Gala look this year, I wanted his hair to be stylish, yet effortless and casual, complementing his recent role in Succession. I was able to achieve this by using American Crew Fiber Grooming Foam, Forming Cream, and Grooming Spray, which provided a strong hold for the red carpet without appearing overly primped and polished,” states celebrity groomer, Kumi Craig

Look Breakdown

1.  To achieve Alexander’s look, I first applied a moderate dosage of American Crew Fiber Grooming Foam to his damp hair to provide heat protection and manageable volume. I then used a diffuser to reduce frizz and enhance the natural texture of the hair.

2.  Then, I finger combed a small amount of American Crew Forming Cream through the hair for a medium hold, natural shine, and added volume.

3.  To finish the look, I blow dried the hair with a diffuser. Once dry, I sprayed a few spritzes of American Crew Grooming Spray to the styled hair to hold everything in place for the long night ahead and provide the hair with a smooth after feel. With buildable coverage, it’s a go-to for touch ups throughout the night if needed.

Jessica Ortiz and Andis Company Groom Formula 1 Driver Daniel Ricciardo for the 2023 Met Gala

Celebrity men’s groomer Jessica Ortiz uses Andis tools to get Daniel Ricciardio red carpet ready.

HAIR AND GROOMING BY: Celebrity Men’s Groomer Jessica Ortiz for Andis Company

TIPS/TECHNIQUE: Using the Andis beSPOKE trimmer, I started by tapering the sideburns and applying the clipper-over-comb technique to remove bulk around the temples.

Then I cleaned up around the ears with the same beSPOKE trimmers; I love their design because it makes detailing around the ears less obstructed.

The trimmer’s close blade allows the freedom of creativity. it can provide a very clean finish or, in my case, a natural shape around the neckline.

Finally, using the Andis reVITE clippers with the fade blade attachment, I faded the beard to flatter his jawline. The compact size and cordless design make it perfect for on-the-go barbering.

PRODUCTS: Andis reSURGE Shaver ($110), Andis reVITE Clipper ($180), and the Andis beSPOKE Trimmer ($250). You can purchase all Andis Company products from authorized Andis® dealers and at andis.com. To learn more about Andis® Company, follow them on InstagramTikTok, and Facebook

We feature a few shops and pros that excel in providing that unparalleled experience, with great technical skill.

Next, let’s talk about education. There are so many avenues through which barbers can gain education, whether it’s at the beginning of their career, or years into it. In the post-pandemic world, there is now more access to virtual education than ever before. However, nothing can fully replace the efficacy of hands – on education. We cover all the options and their pros and cons in this feature.

Cincinnati Barber Praised For Using Day Off to Give Free Haircuts to Kids with Special Needs

Vernon Jackson began Gifted Program haircuts at Noble Barber and Beauty after ‘hearing so many horror stories’ at other shops, reported the Guardian.

Even on his days off Vernon Jackson goes in to work at his barbershop in Cincinnati – it’s because that’s the day he has set aside to give free haircuts to children with special needs.

The kindness which Jackson offers at his Noble Barber and Beauty shop earned a profile from CBS News this week. Jackson told the network he began his Gifted Program haircuts in 2021 after “hearing so many horror stories that parents were going through with … barbers or stylists having no patience with their [children]” at other shops.

Academic research suggests that the reported lack of patience for parents struggling to buy haircuts for their special needs children poses a real dilemma for them. Studies have shown people typically feel more confident and in control in both social as well as professional settings with good, fresh haircuts.

Jackson resolved to sacrifice his day off and open his shop only to children with special needs who were looking to get a proper cut. And what’s more, he tells the children’s parents that their money’s no good there on those days.

“There [are] no other barbers or stylists in the shop, and I [can] give them the full attention they need,” he said in the CBS News report.

Jackson found that at least some of his off-day clients who are sensitive to unfamiliar environments and sounds find the empty shop comforting. His goal is to get the children acclimated to barbershops in general so they can eventually feel comfortable going in for haircuts when there are other patrons around.

Friends and other benefactors sponsor the haircuts that Jackson gives on his day off through donations to an online GoFundMe campaign, according to what he told CBS.

Gifted Program parents “would pay any amount of money just for their child to be able to have an experience like any other person”, he said to the network. “And at the end of it, I can tell them, ‘It’s covered.’”

Those parents often try to tip Jackson a gratuity, he says, but he tells them: “No, trust me … this is a gift from the community, myself – please receive it.”

Instagram users flood Jackson’s account on the platform with encouragement and compliments whenever he posts videos of him cutting the hair of Gifted Program clients.

“I have happy tears,” one user wrote in the comments of a video that Jackson posted showing him lining a Gifted Program boy up in March. “You are truly doing amazing things.”

Andis® Company’s Global Education Team Proud to Welcome Two New Female Barbers

Andis® Company, a leader in professional tools and education for the barber and beauty industry, is excited to introduce Sabra Clark and Brea Retic as the latest additions to its Global Education Team!

Now consisting of 44 educators across four continents, the Global Education Team could not be more thrilled to welcome the two educators and barbershop owners.

Angie Perino, Andis® Global Education Manager, said: “I’m thrilled to add such incredible barbering talent to our roster of global educators.”

She continued: “Not only are Sabra and Brea fantastic advocates for barbering education locally, but, most importantly, they are committed to bettering the next generation of barbers and stylists, no matter where they’re from or what stage in their career.”

Sabra (@Saaabra) was born and raised in San Diego and owns Straight to the Cut Barbershop. She has been fascinated with barbering ever since she was three years old and cut her bangs off after getting a comb tangled in them. She received her barbering license in 2017.

Sabra is also founder of the SoCal Lady Barber Expo, the Lead Barber Educator for Bellus Academy from 2021-2022, and a six-time award-winning competitive barber. One of her goals is to start a non-profit organisation to empower women and femme people in the barber industry, creating a safe space for all to feel beautiful while developing hair and their craft. Now a part of the Andis team, Sabra will share her mission with a global audience.

Brea (@Breajcuts) made a drastic career change in 2009, moving to Atlanta to attend barbering school. Now the owner of the Brea J Cuts Studio and part of the SalonCentric It Takes a Pro Team, she has taken her calling in stride. Discovering her passion for barbering made her realise it was the perfect field to enjoy flexibility, family time, and a better quality of life.

Brea is passionate about helping others and is a volunteer for A Different Cut, which helps barbers style young adults and children on the autism spectrum who can find the sensory aspect of getting a haircut overwhelming. Giving barbers the tools to be thoughtful and prepared in a sensorily-sensitive environment, A Different Cut offers as much peace of mind to barbers as it does to their clients.

Brea will be a powerful addition to the Andis team, fostering encouragement and community while sharing her craft.
