Sport Clips Haircuts donates $1.55m for Help a Hero Scholarships

Sport Clips Haircuts presented a record-breaking $1.55 million check recently to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) Foundation to provide scholarships for service members and veterans. As the nation’s leading provider of men’s and boys’ haircare, the veteran-founded company began work with the VFW in 2013 to offer Help A Hero Scholarships for returning military to prepare for civilian careers that often require additional college, graduate, and technical degrees and training. Since the creation of the program, Sport Clips has donated more than $10 million to the VFW’s “Help A Hero Scholarship” program.

Also, the VFW and Sport Clips have announced that 146 student veterans will receive scholarships for the Spring 2022 semester, totalling nearly $650,000. This brings the number of scholarship recipients to 2,200 and makes the program one of the largest veteran support programs of its kind.

“Helping ease the financial burden of going back to school is a very real way our Sport Clips team members, clients, and product partners say ‘thank you’ to those who serve in the military and their families,” says Gordon Logan, Air Force veteran, VFW Life member, and founder and chairman of Sport Clips. “It’s gratifying to see thousands of veterans… single moms, doctoral candidates, seminarians, technicians… going back to school with the help of these scholarships on their way to meaningful civilian careers.”

“The VFW, along with the veterans, service members and military families we serve cannot express enough our appreciation to the entire Sport Clips team, network and partners for their generous support.” said VFW National Commander Fritz Mihelcic. “Their dedication to America’s student veterans is truly remarkable and serves to make a lifelong, positive impact in the lives of so many.”

Some $122,000 of the donation this year was from Sport Clips’ own $2 per haircare service made by the company on Veterans Day while clients, individual supporters, and Sport Clips team members donated the most generous portion of money raised in stores and through virtual walks. Sport Clips partners Direct Beauty Express,  John Paul Mitchell Systems,  Nioxin,  Sexy Hair,  Gibs Grooming and Actiiv also made substantial contributions.

Application period for fall 2022 Help A Hero Scholarships is open now through April 30 to receive up to $5,000 of assistance per semester, per family for service members and veterans in the rank of E-5 and below. To find out more, visit your local Sport Clips,  SportClips.com/hero or VFW.org/scholarship.

Tennessee Beauty Professionals Required by Law to Help Sufferers of Domestic Abuse

As any barber or beauty professional knows, at times you feel more like a therapist than a beauty therapist. Clients are often inclined to open up to their hairdresser or barber about their personal lives, hardships and struggles. This means beauty professionals are in a unique position to help identify sufferers of domestic violence, and in turn, assist the victims.

This has led to an initiative encouraging barbers, hairstylists, and beauty professionals to become educated and aware of the signs of abuse, with education platforms that give them the tools to help their clients, and potentially save their lives.

As of January 1st, 2022, a new law has passed in the state of Tennessee—the homebase of this initiative, requiring all barbers and beauty professionals to undergo free training to help identify the signs of clients suffering from domestic abuse, and how to lead them to help.

Signs of domestic violence can range from learning about concerning details about their homelife from stories or worries expressed, to physical symptoms, such as bruising or sudden or unusual hair loss.

The law went into effect on Jan. 1, 2022, following a successful initiative first launched in 2017 by Nashville stylist — and survivor of abuse — Susanne Post. She worked with the YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee, which runs the region’s largest women’s emergency shelter and has been engaged in anti-domestic violence education for more than four decades.

Legislation to require the course came to a head thanks to state lawmakers, commerce agency officials and the state Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners.

“Tennessee’s beauty professionals are caring, compassionate individuals who are committed to ensuring the health and safety of all their customers, but may not know how to respond when confronted with domestic violence,” said board executive director Roxana Gumucio in a statement made on July 27, when the bill was passed.

Back in 2017 Susanne Post co-founded an initiative started by the YWCA Nashville and Middle Tennessee, called Shear Haven. Now a proud partner with BARBICIDE, the company hosts training online for hair professionals to gain awareness, education, and tools for spotting and combatting domestic violence.

Beyond Tennessee, the initiative to educate hair and beauty professionals about the signs of domestic abuse is spreading globally.  In the UK and Ireland, SalonEVO Columnist and Beauty Business Expert Liz McKeon is the ambassador for Shear Haven anti-domestic violence salon training, encouraging and spreading awareness and education of this helpful, and potentially lifesaving tool.

The Shear Haven online training consists of a 20-minute online session followed by a short quiz. After completion, each participant will receive a personalised certificate of achievement.

To date, more than 25,000 hair and beauty professionals from around the world have taken the training.

Learn more about the Shear Haven training by visiting the YWCA website  and quiz on the Barbicide website.

The whole truth has yet to be discovered…

Tune into HBO to watch an intensely personal journey as American Crew founder, David Raccuglia, investigates whether Chester Weger is responsible for the brutal murders of three women at Starved Rock State Park some 60 years ago.

HBO documentary series, THE MURDERS AT STARVED ROCK, explores the 1960 brutal murders of three women at Starved Rock State Park in LaSalle, Illinois, and the decades of questions and doubts left in their wake. Produced by American Barber Films and Mark Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas, The Murders at Starved Rock explores this 60-year-old murder mystery. The convicted killer, Chester Weger, maintains his innocence after 60 years in prison and seeks exoneration. Haunted by the murders in his hometown, David Raccuglia has spent the last 15 years delving into the case files, convinced that the whole truth has yet to be uncovered.

What is truly compelling is the fact that David’s family has a personal connection to this case.

David said: “As a kid, Chester Weger was my boogey man, I used to lay in bed terrified that he was going to kill me, because my father was the prosecutor who put Chester in prison for life for his crimes.”

David is on a quest to find out whether there is evidence to prove that Chester is innocent and if there is, he wants to expose it to the world, as this has left his hometown divided for 60 years.

Join in with David’s investigation on @HBOMax, it is streaming now.

At Risk Cleveland Students Receive Full Scholarships Through Wahl Professional’s Innovative Fade It Forward™ Program

November 23, 2021 (Cleveland, OH) – On November 8th, eight Cleveland students received life-changing news when they were awarded full scholarships to local barber schools, thanks to Wahl Clipper Corporation’s Professional division and its innovative Fade It Forward™ program.

“It’s like my dream just came true. I was just so surprised, I almost cried,” said D’Niyae Morris, one of the Fade It Forward scholarship recipients. “It reminds you there’s still good people out here in the world.”

Students will receive mentoring from industry professionals while attending classes at The Keratin Barber College or Allstate Hairstyling and Barber College in Cleveland. The goal of the mentorships is to reinforce the hard work and dedication needed to achieve success in this competitive industry.

Garland “G Whiz” Fox was at the Urban League of Greater Cleveland to personally welcome the shocked recipients into the Wahl family. As a former homeless vet whose life was transformed by his barbering career, this ceremony was incredibly personal for him.

“I can’t think of a more deserving group,” says Fox. “Each student is a story of perseverance. They show up every day, not only for themselves but to improve the lives of their families and community.”

The recipients of the eight scholarships from the Sterling, IL-based clipper manufacturer are: Dominic DeLaRosa, KeVonte Sumlin, D’Niyae Morris, Chad Medley, Jr., (Jason) Jalen Dennis, Faith White, Brandon Thomas and Brooklyn Hatchette.

“I have no doubt these youth will make their families extremely proud,” said Lance Wahl, Global Vice President of Professional Products, Wahl Clipper Corporation. “We can’t wait to see how they progress and grow in their careers.”

This is the third city where the program has made its mark, making its debut in Chicago in 2018 and expanding to St. Louis last year. And Wahl Professional hopes to Fade It Forward to more youth in another community soon.

“Everything about this program is heartfelt. We are a family. Wahl is a family-owned company. And we are about community,” said Fox.

We spoke with Frankie Perez who has been with Sport Clips for eight years, and now works in San Diego. “I had a misconception of what Sport Clips was and what they were all about, until my wife introduced me to them. Honestly, I just didn’t feel like I fit in there. I felt like everybody had a certain look, and everybody was a certain way, and I realized real quick that wasn’t the case. I realized that I did fit in there, and there was a place for me there.”

“When I actually got in there and started to learn all about it, I was like, man this company has everything, everything that you need to succeed, everything that you need to feel welcome, everything that you need to feel part of a family, part of a team. And to be honest, I’ve worked for different franchises, different corporations, and I’ve just never experienced anything like that. So, it was really surprising to me.”

“The training is incredible, and we are all put through it. It is geared to people that are new to the business all the way to the ones that have been in the business for 25 years. We really invest in our team members and set them up for success. The culture is strong and it’s more of a family environment than a job. We want to see you succeed. We want to see you grow. We want to see you buy that car, that home that you always wanted. We want to see you go on those vacations. So, I think it’s really personalized to each team member.”

Wahl Professional Introduces New Field Sales Team

In-depth, in-person education will serve as a catalyst for client success.

November 11, 2021 (Sterling, IL) – The beauty industry sales process has changed due to e-commerce, the “Amazon effect” and fewer distributors.

Wahl Professional is making things personal again with the creation of their Field Sales Team.

“We determined the best strategy for our business was to get closer to our distribution customers and Professional Barbers & Stylists with our own Territory Managers, who are focused on our brand and developing relationships with our customers,” says Anne Marie Kollias, US Director of Sales and Marketing for Wahl Professional.

The seven Territory Managers will be led by Andrew Papoccia, a native of Sterling, Illinois, the birthplace of the Wahl Clipper Corporation. Their mission is to provide barbers, stylists, and Distribution Managers with the education they need to make informed purchasing decisions.

“Our customers are a direct extension of Wahl, and we want them to be informed accordingly,” says Papoccia. “Our Wahl sales team gives our customers direct and immediate access to help best support their needs to be successful in today’s marketplace.”

Andrew served as the National Sales Manager for Wahl Italy before accepting his new role. His in-depth knowledge of the Wahl line of products made him a natural choice. So did his understanding of what the Wahl brand stands for: Professional passion, family ties, and quality tools for exceptional looks. When building his team, he made sure this same familiarity was front and center.

“Our Territory Managers first needed to connect with the values and culture of Wahl Clipper Corp,” he says. “The team has all adopted the Wahl culture into their daily lives and carried that through to our customers.”

Educating Through Collaborating

Territory Managers meet at least monthly to discuss recent industry trends. They also talk about the types of questions prospects are asking to ensure they’re even better prepared for every client interaction.

As Thomas Crumpton, Territory Manager for the Southeastern US region states, “Proper planning prevents poor performance.”

The sales process might vary slightly based on the end consumer, such as a barber shop or distributor. But Territory Managers make it a point to discuss more than Wahl product benefits. It’s common for their agendas to include improvements available for the customer business model, such as additional resources for marketing or growing client sales.

The team is already seeing success with visits to salons, barber shops and distribution centers, despite the lingering obstacles of Covid.

“The feedback has been extremely positive,” says Kollias. “Our distributors feel better connected to our brand and the direct feedback from distributors and industry professionals allows us to better respond to their needs.”
