SID SOTTUNG JOINS THE ANDIS EDUCATION TEAM

Renowned barber set to inspire the Andis Nation!

As a leading manufacturer of clippers and trimmers for professional barbers and stylists, Andis recognises the need for world-class education. To expand its already strong team of professional educators, Andis names renowned barber, Sid Sottung, as the latest addition to its global team.

Sottung has captured the imagination of barbers with his distinctive image, creativity and technical precision. Achieving a high industry and media profile, he has risen to celebrity status in the barbering fraternity, and it was a combination of his talents that motivated Andis to secure his expertise as part of their global team.

‘Sid inspires through his natural ability to reach out and engage. His creative work is regarded among the best in the industry and he will quickly become a tremendous asset to our already strong team, as we train hair professionals to master clipper techniques,’ says Andis Education Manager Jessica Zeinstra. ‘To deliver great style and push the boundaries of hair fashion, the best tools and training are essential. Sid and our team of fantastic educators will empower other professionals to take their men’s grooming skills to a whole new level.”

MORE ON SID SOTTUNG

Sid fell in love with barbering at the age of 14 while working as a shop assistant in a traditional Italian barbershop in New York. Eager to make his name, he embarked on a 14-year career with Vidal Sassoon where he rose to Assistant Creative Director, collaborating on editorial work and maintaining a celebrity client base. Sid also worked backstage at revered international fashion shows including crafting hair for Joseph Abboud’s Mens’ Collection at New York Fashion Week. After his time with Sassoon, Sid pursued a freelance career guesting and teaching in exclusive salons and barbershops. Having trained educators and written curriculums for academies, Sid opened his very own academy The Sid Sottung Academy in Nottingham, UK.

Chris Foster styles the West Indies Cricket Team

Who do you call when you have a team of sporting heroes in need of a spruce? Male grooming expert Chris Foster of course!

Chris, Creative Director at The Refinery in Mayfair, recently headed to the Marriott Hotel in Regents Park, London to give three of the West Indies cricket team a fresh new look.

Chris was contacted by the owners of Prestige Hair Extension Connoisseurs as their salon is based inside the hotel where the team were staying. Having seen him present at various events and knowing his skill and technique, they knew they needed a specialist like Chris to come and provide his services for the team members, as they are all very particular with their haircuts.

Chris spent the afternoon with the team, giving haircuts, beard trims, mini facials and massages to three of the players in total; Shane Dowrich, Kemar Roach and Roston Chase. The Captain Jason Holder also came along and although he didn’t get a haircut, watched Chris at work whilst quizzing him on his equipment and fading techniques. Jason was so impressed that he left with the promise that he would check out Chris’s YouTube videos for a little barbering education of his own!

Chris says, “It was a fantastic afternoon and the guys were absolutely lovely. It was really chilled, with many players popping in and sticking around to chat and hang out. It felt just like a Barber shop but with 5-star service!”

Kent Brushes Celebrates 240th Anniversary And Receipt Of Queen’s Award for Enterprise

It was a time for celebration earlier this month, as the world’s oldest brush manufacturer Kent Brushes, commemorated two achievements: their 240th anniversary and the official presentation of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, by her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Hertfordshire, Mr Robert Voss CBE DL.

The special luncheon, which took place in the grounds of Chairman of Kent Brushes, Alan Cosby’s family home in Hemel Hempstead, saw 70 employees past and present and special guests attend to celebrate receiving the UK’s highest accolade for international business success, as well as the company’s landmark birthday.

After a celebratory speech by Alan charting the history of the brand, which produces over 250 different brushes and is the only brush manufacturer to have held the prestigious Royal Warrant for nine consecutive reigns, Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire presented the award and a special scroll signed by Her Majesty the Queen. Speaking of Kent’s achievements he said:

“As the new Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire this is my first presentation of a Queen’s Award and it’s very special to present something to a company that is 240 years old and started in 1777. It’s an amazing achievement as Kent Brushes really are part of history.

“The average lifespan of a company in the UK is 20 years. 50% of SMEs don’t survive the first five years as they fail to follow their customers’ needs and track what their competitors are doing. Kent have obviously done both very successfully and for a long time gone from strength to strength.

“Heritage brands are very respected across the world and Kent are now exporting to over 64 countries and going strong. Therefore, it is with enormous pride that I’m delighted to present this award.”

Alan Cosby, Chairman and Managing Director of Kent Brushes commented:

“240 years is a landmark in our history. Kent Brushes was started by William Kent in 1777 aged just 24 years old, at a time where there was no electricity, that came in 1831, no telephones, they arrived in 1876 and no light bulbs, they arrived in 1879. All production was handmade, when basic steam powered driven factory machines were in their infancy. Deliveries were made on horseback.

“We have experienced many good times and survived various recessions by hunkering down, improving our techniques, our labour force, automation, innovation and market expansion.

“From the design of the products we sell to the intricate production, construction, packing and shipping, our achievements are only possible because of the entire team’s involvement and I thank them all for their dedication. We have proudly been known as providers of the world’s finest brushes since 1777 and I hope that our success as a family business continues for the next 240 years and beyond.”

Barbershops overtake pubs as leading place for men to hangout

Survey results released ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10

A recent survey by men’s mental health charity The Lions Barber Collective and premium men’s grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge has revealed that men are now spending more time in their barbershops each month then at their local watering holes.

From 1,726 surveyed men living in the UK, 92% declared that they visit their barbershop or hair salon at least once per month. Ten per cent even admit to making weekly trips to smarten up their styles and socialise with like-minded regulars. In comparison, only 70% make the effort to visit their local pub at least once a month.

The shift from pubs to barbershops also highlights the strengthening relationship that men now have with their barbers. This is supported by 69% of the surveyed men, who rate their relationship with their barber far better than their relationship with their local pub landlord.

On this shift, Managing Director of The Bluebeards Revenge David Hildrew, said: “While the past might have seen a man confiding in the landlords and ladies that pour him his favourite beverage, barbering’s recent renaissance has allowed men to develop real and meaningful relationships with the professionals that cut their hair.”

The former Royal Marine Commando went on to praise the efforts of charities such as The Lions Barber Collective for using this newly founded channel to break down the barriers that men build when talking about mental illness.

Founded by award-winning barber Tom Chapman, The Lions Barber Collective is actively working to make barbershops all over the world a secure and non-judgemental space in which men can open up about their private and personal issues in a non-clinical way.

The need for these services is made even greater with the research suggesting that 33% of men now live in a world where they find it increasingly difficult to talk about their private matters with their partners and close friends. In comparison, only 20% of men find it hard to discuss the same issues with their barbers.

According to Chapman, statistics like these highlight how important it is to have trustworthy relationships outside of our usual social circles. He says: “Barbers are in a unique position that allows them to have conversations with their customers that they would rarely share with others. The fact that we are outside of their social circles means men can open up about their issues without fear of others finding out – it is often a massive relief for men when they can share the load.”

The work of The Lions Barber Collective and The Bluebeards Revenge comes at a crucial time, as men all over the world continue to battle with an archaic stereotype that encourages them to bottle up their emotions and stresses. Despite all the help that is offered by charities such as The Lions Barber Collective, a staggering 58% of men still feel that they cannot openly speak out about their mental health, the survey revealed.

The research also found that men are much more stressed today than they were ten years ago; with a staggering 62% of those aged 35 or over saying they feel greater pressure in 2017 than they did in 2007.

Forty-nine per cent cited work as the main reason for this extra strain, while a worrying 35% blamed the rise of social media for an increase in stress levels. Money (28%) and a lack of socialising (15%) were other major factors men mentioned in the survey.

“While social media can offer many benefits, it can be argued that it has also transformed our culture into one of over-sharing,” explained Chapman.

“This can lead to a person, and especially a man, critically comparing their life with other people’s and using others’ posts as measures for successes and failures in their own life. The impact of this is feelings of low self-esteem and envy, resulting in negative ‘I am’ statements, such as ‘I will never be able to be like that person’. This pressure is only going to increase as social media continues to dominate our lives.”

Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK and, in 2014, 74% of all suicide victims in the UK were male**.

The Lions Barber Collective are working with The Bluebeards Revenge to help raise the awareness of men’s mental health. The Bluebeards Revenge is rolling out an on pack awareness campaign, as well as launching a co-branded hair styling gel with the profits going to the charity’s great cause.

Samaritans’ Big Listen launches across the UK

From high streets to hair salons, supermarkets to stations, Samaritans has got the nation working on its listening skills for The Big Listen on 24th July.

Tom Chapman, Founder of The Lions Barber Collective and International Barber teamed up with Samaritans to help raise awareness and promote the importance of listening to one another. Tom Chapman said “We, as barbers are in such a privilege position behind the chair. We often make a huge difference to our clients without even knowing the impact we may have had”

Mental health campaigners Jonny Benjamin MBE and Neil Laybourn, whose friendship came from Neil taking time to listen to Jonny when he felt suicidal, showed their support by going for a quick trim at Samaritan’s pop-up barber’s at King’s Cross station.

Hairdressers across the UK are backing the campaign to get everyone downloading Samaritans’ SHUSH! Listening Tips and taking time to let others talk. With an estimated 2,000 hours a year each spent listening to clients, they know the difference to people’s lives it makes.

Jonny Benjamin MBE said: “The simple and human act of listening is so important and it makes such a difference.”

Neil Laybourn said: It’s great that we are working together to raise awareness of the importance of listening and providing support for people in their communities.

Cutting Jonny’s hair was Tom Chapman from the Lions Barber Collective, an international group of top barbers who’ve come together to raise awareness to prevent suicide. Tom Chapman said: “We are stronger together and the more we can join up and get the message out about how crucial listening is, the better.”

Samaritans’ The Big Listen also has support from leading celebrity hairdresser, Verona White, who stopped by to style Neil’s hair. Verona White said: Everyone needs someone to talk to and it’s not always family. A good listener will let people talk and read the person and be responsive, it’s not about giving advice.”

More than 150 events are being held across the UK to mark The Big Listen, timed for 24 July (24/7) to reflect the round the clock support Samaritans offers to anyone feeling overwhelmed. Hairdresser and Gogglebox star Stephen Webb is also backing The Big Listen, along with Haircuts4Homeless, who give their time and skills for free to people who are homeless or living rough.

Volunteers have also been out in force over the weekend sharing with the public the importance of being a good listener and giving out Samaritans’ SHUSH! Listening Tips. Up and down the country, iconic buildings are being lit up green in support of Samaritans’ campaign to get us all listening more.

Samaritans’ CEO Ruth Sutherland said: “Three times more people die by suicide than from road accidents. Samaritans volunteers are trained to be good listeners, but this is a skill we can all learn. Many hairdressers are naturally good listeners and many more people can learn those skills too. I’m grateful to Jonny, Neil, Tom, Verona and everyone at Lions Barber Collective and Haircuts4Homeless for helping get that message out there. Together we will save lives.”
